There has been quite a bit of bee news in the last day or so, and I thought I would give you a set of links to some articles I read yesterday:
- Quest for a Superbee – This article from National Geographic discusses the efforts to create strains of bees that are able to fend off Varroa and other parasites. It is particularly interesting because is addresses a lot of what ABI is trying to do… but it also discusses some other things, many of which sound a little disturbing. Anyway, I think we’re on the right track.
- Dying honeybees, and the uncertain future of honey – One of several articles in yesterday’s Washington Post. It is of particular interest to Alaskans, because what we’re trying to do is to expand the availability of local honey.
- Honeybees dying, situation ‘unheard of’ – An article about yesterday’s announcement that in 2014, 40 percent of American honeybee colonies did not survive. It is important to read this article fully, because not all of the losses were overwintering losses. It also states that Colony Collapse Disorder is actually becoming less of a problem. Nonetheless, we still have a problem.
